The purpose of the wildlife area is to preserve and develop habitat for wintering waterfowl and to provide public hunting and recreation. The area continues to serve those uses. In addition, it provides habitat for many species of fish and wildlife and GREAT recreational opportunities.
As you visit the wildlife area you will see signs that may restrict your activities. Prime use of the area is management of wildlife and its habitat. Please remember that the rules are to provide for proper wildlife management.
When you go to Sauvie you increase the beach use statistics that Fish and Wildlife keep. You count as 2.1 beach users even though you never leave the car or set foot on the beach

Hi Carl,
I was just checking for information on Sauvie's COB and found your website. My
wife and I visited Sauvie's Island COB a few years ago and found it enjoyable.
I even played some volleyball with some of the regulars when they were down at
I have a few questions if you have the time.
We plan on coming to Sauvie's in a couple of weeks, weather permitting. I would
like to bring our boat but I'm not sure where to launch from. Also what is the
rules when it comes to dogs on nude beaches? She's a black lab, loves to do
nothing(and I mean nothing but...) but chase a frisbee, ball, stick or whatever
you want to throw. She'll do that all day long. We also have a camper/truck
combo. Is there camping anywhere close where we might spend the night instead
of driving too far to another area?
Thanks for any info.

Carl if you use this no email address please. Just thought the folks who go to Collins should know that some asshole has been snapping candid pictures and posting them on an Internet voyeur site. So, keep your eyes open and if you spot the idiot, do what you gotta do. Many of the posted pics clearly show faces.

Both my wife and I have been going to
We did have one occaision where my wife and I took a friend down to the beach for the first time, and as my buddy and I were coming back from the water, we noticed a guy sitting in the wide open where he could look right up between my wifes legs, and was "taking care of himself". My friend and I circled around behind and surprised him, and assured him that was my wife, and that kind of behavior was not the norm around here. He became erratic saying it was a free world, and we decided it was time to take action into our own hands, as we did not have a peace-officer near by. Needless to say he was fed more than his share of "knuckle sandwich" and sent on his way.
Don't get me wrong though..........
I don't go down to the beach looking for fights, and the last thing we need is some vigilante running around like bat-man tryng to save all the good people of the beach. But, people that go there intending to make trouble should be fairly warned that the folks that are there to enjoy themselves at one of the best clothing optional beaches in the nation, will not tolerate rude, childish behavior and will try thier best to protect what they have so ALL of the fun won't be spoiled by the "rotten few"
This has been the only problem that has EVER come up, for us anyway, in the almost 3 years we've been going, and we plan to keep going back on every sunny day possible.
Hope to see you all there!

Signs on the fence say "Entry beyond this sign prohibited." ODFW enclosed the _existing_ buffer area in barbed wire, and made it off limits all year - instead of off limits only from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. FOSICOB had proposed that way back in 1993. No beach has been lost - so far.
As for the rumored rumor of future police presence on the beach, I hope that
happens over the full length of all three beaches - and especially near the

Today, 5/3, the Fish and Wildlife folk erected a barbed wire fence at the North Boundary of the CO beach, adjacent to the property owned by the folks who brought the lawsuit. This reduces the beach by less than 50 ft, which is insignificant. I suppose this should satisfy the judge, but who knows about the landowners? (they might still be able to see if they get better binoculars!) There is also a rumor that patrols might be started to ensure that nobody crosses the boundary.

Being a couple and pretty open minded, we brushed this off, however, I can see how this would make any single females or a group of them very nervous. It was such a shame that this beach seemed to have such sexual overtones. One of the gawkers decided to "take care of himself" not 15 yards from us. Which saddened us. Why don't they just go to a strip club?
It won't prevent us from returning, but I wish these people could see the spiritual side of the place and leave the sex at home.

Bright sunny day at
Greatest crowds were at pathways #2 and #3 at the volleyball area and just north of the volleyball area. Mostly small groups of 2-6 with a lot of singles laying out in the sun. Several boats moored near #2 area. Some were sunning nude on their boat, others were ashore chatting.
One couple next to me stood out because of their total lack of tan. The man was nude immediately but his wife stayed dressed for about an hour. Later she got down to her panties and a hat for a short while. It may have been their first attempt at naturism and they weren't too willing to talk. He did put some lotion on my back for me and we chatted for a minute. They only stayed about 2 hours.
Two couples and a teenage son set up on the other side and the boy and his dad tried out a wind surfer.
There were a few gawkers who looked like workers from the nearby farms. They caused no problems. Altogether, a very pleasant day. Quite, peaceful, and sunny. I will definitely return when the opportunity arises.

If you are looking for an unspoiled beach to explore naturism PLEASE read this!
Your directions were excellent. My girlfriend & I (26 & 36 yrs.)
found the beach without any problem. Once we arrived we used entrance #6 as
advised for first time visitors. We had driven 3.5 hours down from
This unusual "lurking in the bushes" & creepy behavior continued. Because none of these men were visibly gratifying themselves, there was no just cause in making a scene. Besides we didn't want to "flatter" ourselves in thinking that either of us could drive men to that level of Cro-Magnon behavior. We tried to just relax and enjoy the sun. After several hours of this & several diversionary walks on the beach we felt that if the "vibe" continued another minute we would just leave. Not 30 seconds later a man on the beach 100 ft. away, in his late 50's (old enough to know better) began gratifying himself in full view of dozens of other visitors. No one, I repeat NO ONE seemed to give a shit. Coincidentally 1 of the 6 females on the beach happened to be walking within 5 ft. of the sick fucker on her way to potty, presumably. He was in full swing when she returned minutes later. We didn't stick around to see if any of the dozen or so people within 30 feet of him ever did or said anything. We were packed & out of there in minutes.
We believe that we enjoy naturism for all of the right reasons. But, when we
visit a beach in search of fulfilling those reasons, and wind up leaving with
thoughts of beating the shit out of a dirty old pervert with a piece of
driftwood, it really spoils the mood. For those of you who have visited, and
will visit,
Love,
Rob

Rarely have I had a bad experience. A couple of growling dogs, one loud boombox and the inevitable gawkers just about fill up the 'negative' category. All of us who behave in a civilized, considerate manner play an essential role in keeping this beach open to clothing-free use.

I visited Collins beach on the 21st and 22nd of July. I cannot be certain, but one of those days was overcast in the morning, and the other was sunny and hot! A few hardcore naturists were in attendance on the cool overcast day, but on the sunny and warm day the beach was humming with activity.
I had the pleasure of being near a couple of guys who were fishing and
having a good time, and one of the gentlemen would burst out in a joyful voice
that he just loved to be naked...haha . So everyone was having a blast. A
wonderful introduction for me to the nudist lifestyle that I always believed in
and never seemed to take the time to enjoy! The only problem I encountered was
the loose sand under water that was almost like stepping in quicksand. If you
take the kiddies, keep an eye out so they don't become mired in the underwater
sand because if a big boat would happen by, the wake would be enough to put
them underwater if the were to get stuck in the muck. All in all, it was a
relaxing 2 days and I am glad I finally discovered Sauvie's

As I did last year on this very same weekend, I made a point to get to
When I tried visiting this beach a few weeks ago, the beach was almost completely under water, with dry sand accessible only after wading in waist deep and traveling a short distance in less-than-clear water. I posted a trip report which drew an excellent response from
After that trip report, I received some helpful information from in reply in
determining when the beach is accessible. Check the official water level for
the Columbia River measured at
The water was cool but not too cold. My daughters and I made a game of throwing the frisbee further into the water each time to draw the other players in deeper and deeper. Large ships traversing the river occasionally created just a hint of surf. The balance was 60% male and 40% female. My older daughter, a 16 year old teenager typically not quite comfortable with nudism herself, is becoming more and more comfortable there, a sign perhaps that the beach crowd is a healthy and well-behaved mix of singles, couples and families.
I have gotten to get to know a couple of the old-timers better. "Wolfgang" and his wife, "Sally", have been there every single time I have. They must practically live there. They both have skin like basketballs. They’ve been quietly helpful to me in the past and take a great deal of paternal ownership over our beach there. They both appear to be in their 60s, a bit heavy, and he speaks with a heavy German accent. If you see them, you’ll know them. Say "hi."
There was a bit of an altercation as we were leaving when a newbie decided
to display his affection and erection toward an unaccompanied female who was
minding her own business. The old-timers saw what was going on and interrupted
him. He became more and more agitated and what was a confrontation turned into
an argument and was about to go to fists. As more nudists responded to the
situation, the newbie decided he was outnumbered, got dressed, and left
protesting all the way down the trail. I have a theory about such
confrontations that females probably do a much better job than males do in
shutting down these guys when they parade their erection. The guy became more
and more aggressive and defensive when another guy was telling him that his
public lewdness was inappropriate, but he was clearly off-balance when he was
being addressed by the female old-timer on the subject. The males did help by
their silent presence, and by refusing to be drawn into the confrontation
despite his fighting words. The object of his affection also helped when she
asked, "why don’t you just leave, nobody wants you here?" Since
I’ve only witnessed this happen one other time before, at San Onofre, I
don’t have much to go on. But if it happens again, I think I’ll
just show up and keep my mouth shut, let the female(s) handle the words, and
let the guy calm down and realize he was wrong or leave. Any experience here,
regulars? This is very unusual for this particular beach. Another
